Columbus, GA: Building a Business and a Life. Guest Blog by Emilie Schario

Last week, a college student asked me why Turbine is headquartered here in Columbus, GA. After a second of confusion, my response was simple: "Because I live here." However, his question made me realize that Columbus offers more than personal comfort for a founder like me.

Challenging the Stereotypes

The common stereotype of a startup founder is a young 20-something based in a city like San Francisco or New York, living frugally and working tirelessly. However, research shows that the most successful founders are often further along in their lives, balancing their business priorities with a rich personal life. With its unique blend of resources and community, Columbus is an ideal place for such balanced entrepreneurship.

A Journey Through Tech Hubs

My career in high technology, spanning various cities outside the conventional tech hubs, has shaped my perspective on what an ideal base for a startup looks like. I've worked with notable Silicon Valley startups, including GitLab ($GTLB), Netlify, and Smile Direct Club (formerly $SDC).

My family came to Columbus because of other factors, but being in Columbus didn't factor into my decision to start Turbine, a lightweight ERP for companies managing physical inventories. The idea of moving or waiting until it was convenient to move to start my company did not cross my mind.

Columbus's Strategic Advantages

Columbus is the second-largest city in Georgia, strategically located near Atlanta. It's home to significant employers and institutions, like Fort Moore, Aflac, Synovus, and TSYS. The city's potential as a regional tech hub, especially in light of the bipartisan work around the Chips4Chips Initiatives, positions it as a burgeoning center for technological growth. Moreover, the rise of venture funds focused on Georgia and the Southeast adds to its appeal as a startup haven.

StartUP Columbus and Local Support

StartUP Columbus itself is an Entrepreneur Support Organization and Business Incubator in Columbus, Georgia. With companies such as Prestige Shrimp Supplier, TapWagen, iParadox, ClinCept, Soothe Beginnings, and Slumberpod moving through and around StartUP Columbus, a growing ecosystem of entrepreneurs is building for Columbus and beyond. Groups like the Columbus Angels offer local capital for early-stage founders. This local incubator is not just a support system but a catalyst for innovative ideas and ventures.

Lifestyle and Cost of Living

Columbus offers an incredible quality of life with its affordable housing, vibrant arts scene with the centrally located River Center and Springer Opera House; local sports teams, including the Columbus River Dragons in hockey, Columbus Lions in arena football, and the newly announced Minor League Affiliate of the Atlanta Braves; a major airport (CSG); a University ecosystem in Columbus State; abundance availability of locally grown food, including Turntime Farms, Mercy Med Farm, Jenny Jack Farms and others available at The Food Mill; and many other beautiful characteristics, Columbus is a gem in the Southeast. The city is full of convenience and charm, making it not just a place for business but for a fulfilling life.
